Chronology
Leonard Fife, one of the 60,000 draft dodgers and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid service in Vietnam, shares all his secrets to demystify his mythological life. This is the second time Paul Schrader has directed one of Banks’ novels, following his adaptation of The Torment (1997).
I saw it in Cannes, at the film’s premiere
It is mentioned in the Film Junk Podcast: Episode 961: In a Violent Nature + TIFF 2024 (2024). OH, CANADA is a highly original film by one of the masters of cinema, a true work of art.
The film is beautifully made with strong visuals
It features beautiful cinematography and great set design. The acting is strong, especially Richard Gere, who plays the title character.
I recommend it
He gives a wonderful and unforgettable performance in the style of Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES – a complicated, not always sympathetic, but convincing character. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but in my opinion it is one of Paul Schrader’s greatest achievements and a gift for cinema lovers.
